History & Heritage Society

The Knockraha History and Heritage Society exists to keep the local people informed of historical matters as well as looking after historical sites in the area.      The projects we have been involved in over the past year includes maintaining and organising a mass at St. Quains Holy Well, organising a walk on the old mass path from Butlerstown to Knockraha Church, an historical programme on 103FM radio, having one of the best stands at the County Historical exhibitions at Cork City Hall and St Mary’s Church in Knockraha 25 years since its reconstruction in 1984 was marked with a special evening of events beginning with a con celebrated mass of recent and former priests of the parish presided over by Dr. John Buckley Bishop of Cork and Ross.    This was followed by a social event in The Community Centre with teas supplied by the ladies of the I.C.A.  At the function a presentation on behalf of the History Society was made to Mrs. Sarah Hickey having served over 30 years as sacristan of the church.  She was presented with an illuminated address citing her contribution over the years.  The presentation was made by Bishop John Buckley.    To commemorate the Silver Jubilee  the History Society brought out a photographic book on the reconstruction of the church and events held in it since.  A limited number of books are still available and can be got from any member of the Historical Society or by phoning             087 9864177
